### INFORMATION FOR PARENTS about MATH

Dear Parents,
Just as an FYI; your children are currently working with fractions in both grades.

Grade 4 students are adding fractions with common denominators. Next week we will be subtracting fractions and reducing the final answer to the lowest common term. As well, we will be making equivalent fractions. We will need to look at comparing fractions to see which is bigger such as 3/4 or 1/2. I will teach them how to compare fractions by making common denominators AND by using concrete illustrations.

Grade 5 students are currently adding fractions with common denominators AND  with different denominators. This means that they are making common denominators before they can add. Next week we will be learning how to simplify fractions such as 6/5 = 1 1/5

We will be learning how to make improper fractions and how to make proper fractions; how to add and subtract mixed fractions. As well, we will be looking at comparing fractions with unlike denominators and represent, compare and order fractions.
